Ellie Jane Goulding, born December 30, 1986 at Hereford England. Tracey Goulding Summers is her mother. Her father Arthur Goulding comes from a funeral home-based family. Goulding's older sister Isabel and her younger sister Jordan are sisters. Alex is her brother. Alex her brother plays bass and is part of the Hereford band. In her early years, she was encouraged to learn the piano by her mother. She began learning to play the clarinet when she was nine. She began to write songs of her own at the age of 14 but it wasn't until she went off to college that she really pursued writing songs. Goulding was intrigued by electronic and dance music as she studied. With the help of MySpace, she was able to contact Frankmusik who helped her create her folktronica.
